Why HecTec Labs exists

HecTec Labs is an independent non-profit foundation researching and rating the privacy posture of consumer hardware, applications, websites, and AI tools.

Modern privacy advice on the open web is overwhelmingly broken. The two dominant categories are too generic to act on (vague checklists, recycled buyer's guides) or paid placement dressed up as editorial (affiliate links, sponsored verdicts, "ranked best of" SEO bait). A consumer asking "is this safe?" deserves a real answer, with sources, and a paper trail.

We started HecTec Labs to build that answer. The Sovereign Beacon™ rating archive at sovereignware.org is the first product release — every rating with a permanent URL, named sources, a published methodology, and a right-of-reply process for the rated party.

Editorial commitments

  • No payment from rated parties. Sovereignware™ accepts no sponsorship, advertising, or consideration of any kind from the companies we rate. Funding is foundation-grant and operator-funded.
  • Published methodology, versioned. Every rating cites the methodology version it was produced under. When we change how we rate, we say so on the record.
  • Right of reply. Any rated party that believes a rating is incomplete or outdated may submit a response, and we publish it alongside the original.
  • Corrections on the record. When we get something wrong, the correction appends to the original rating — we don't silently edit.
  • Cited sources, primary preferred. Every material claim links to a regulator filing, reputable press, audit, or primary source. Cards without verifiable citations don't ship.

Cadence

New ratings publish every Sunday at 7:00 PM ET and every Wednesday at 7:00 AM ET. Ten ratings per drop. Same methodology each time.

Founder

HecTec Labs was founded by Hector Cabrera, the architect of the Trinary Bound™ data-custody methodology and the Sovereignware™ stack. He is the inventor on U.S. Utility Patent Application 19/458,785 (Patent Pending) and has assigned all rights — patents, trademarks, and related intellectual property — to HecTec.ai Inc., a Delaware C-Corporation. The lab pairs independent editorial research with sovereign software infrastructure to demonstrate what privacy-respecting consumer technology actually looks like in practice.

Cabrera was profiled as a Berkeley College International Business student in a 2019 Berkeley Today feature and writes on LinkedIn.
